The global influence of Bollywood continues to grow, and at the center of it stands Shah Rukh Khan, whose fan following stretches far beyond India. Adding to his international admirers is Tony Burke, who recently opened up about his deep appreciation for Hindi cinema and its iconic stars.
During a candid conversation on the Indian Link podcast with Pawan Luthra, Burke didn’t hold back his admiration. “I am a massive Shah Rukh Khan fan, so let me start with that,” he said, while also expressing his love for the music of A. R. Rahman, whose soundtracks have shaped some of Bollywood’s most memorable films.
When asked about his favourite Hindi films, Burke singled out Chak De! India as particularly meaningful. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan as a determined hockey coach, holds a special place for him due to its connection with Australia. Parts of the film were shot across cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
“I am biased, I will take Chak De! India because that was filmed here,” he shared. Interestingly, when asked about his allegiance during the film’s climactic match, he admitted that while he cheered for India in Lagaan, he rooted for Australia in Chak De! India.
Tony Burke also praised the grandeur and storytelling of Jodhaa Akbar, calling it “phenomenal.” The historical drama stars Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and is widely celebrated for its scale, performances, and music.
However, it is Om Shanti Om that holds the top spot in Burke’s heart - not just as his favourite Bollywood film, but his favourite film of all time.
Reflecting on the film’s emotional depth, he highlighted one of its most memorable lines: “If it’s not a happy ending, then it’s not the end.” He described the sentiment as simple yet profoundly beautiful, capturing the essence of hope and storytelling that resonates across cultures.
Directed by Farah Khan, Om Shanti Om marked the Bollywood debut of Deepika Padukone and featured a stellar cast including Shreyas Talpade, Arjun Rampal, and Kirron Kher.
Tony Burke’s admiration highlights Bollywood’s expanding cultural reach and its ability to connect with audiences worldwide. From sports dramas to historical epics and romantic musicals, Hindi cinema continues to bridge continents and fans like Burke are proof that Shah Rukh Khan’s charm truly knows no borders.
