His breakthrough in Hindi cinema came with films like "Woh Kaun Thi?" (1964) and "Shaheed" (1965), in which he played the freedom fighter Sukhdev—a rare positive role for him. However, his defining moment was the villainous role in "Upkaar" (1967), after which he became one of the most sought-after antagonists in Bollywood.
Prem Chopra forged a successful on-screen partnership with superstar Rajesh Khanna, appearing together in 19 films from 1969 to 1991, including hits such as "Do Raaste," "Kati Patang," "Prem Nagar," and "Bebus."
From the late 1990s onwards, he reduced his villainous portrayals and increasingly appeared in supporting positive roles.
His memorable filmography includes classics like "Shaheed," "Upkaar," "Do Raaste," "Kati Patang," "Kala Sona," "Dostana," "Kranti," and many others. His contribution to Indian cinema has been widely recognized and he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 68th Filmfare Awards in 2023.
