Anup Kumar (born Anup Kumar Ganguly; June 17, 1930 - September 3, 1998) was an Indian actor who is known for his work in Bengali cinema.
He was born in Calcutta (now Kolkata), Bengal Presidency, British India. Although he achieved special fame in Bengali films, he was primarily a theatre worker.
Anup Kumar took his acting lessons from his father and the renowned theatre actor Sisir Kumar Bhaduri. He started acting quite early in life and got his first break as a child artist in Dhiren Ganguly's film "Halkatha" in 1938.

The movies "Nimantran" and "Palatak" exposed his versatility as an actor. Besides his superlative performance in "Palatak," Anup Kumar is also remembered for his brilliant comic timing. Along with classic comedians like Nabadwip Haldar, Bhanu Bandopadhyay, Jahor Roy, and Rabi Ghosh, Anup Kumar is much-admired for his comedic roles in films such as "Basanto Bilap," "Mouchak," "Dadar Kirti," and "Protisodh".
After the death of Rabi Ghosh, Anup Kumar was cast as Jatayu, the famous friend of Satyajit Ray's detective Feluda. He was also involved with live theatre, yatras, and film directing.
Some of his notable films include "Palatak" (1963), "Tilottama" (1978), and "Bosepukure Khunkharapi" (1996). He is also known for his work in movies like "Bhalobasa Ki Aage Bujhini" (2001), "Padma Pramatta Nadi" (1948), and "Ek Pasla Brishti" (1991).
Anup Kumar received numerous awards throughout his career. In 1964, he was awarded the BFJA Award (Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award) for Best Actor for his performance in the film "Palatak".
He received a silver medal from the Star Theatre. In 1988, he won the West Bengal Natya Academy Award. In 1989, he was awarded the Siromoni Prize, and in 1991, he was awarded Best Director for his yatras. In 1997, he was recognized by the BFJA Awards for completion of 50 years in films, and he received the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award 1997 – Best Actor for the movie "Jatras".
Anup Kumar was married to Aloka Ganguly. He is survived by his wife Aloka Ganguli. He died on September 4, 1998 (some sources say September 3, 1998) in Calcutta (Kolkata), West Bengal, India.
