Manoj Kumar

Manoj Kumar, born Harikrishan Giri Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Abbottabad, British India, was a legendary figure in Indian cinema. Known for his patriotic roles, he earned the nickname "Bharat Kumar" and became a symbol of nationalism and social justice through his films. 

His family migrated to Delhi after the Partition, a traumatic experience that deeply influenced his worldview. Manoj Kumar pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hindu College in Delhi and adopted his screen name inspired by Dilip Kumar's character in the film Shabnam. 

His career began with the film Fashion in 1957, but he gained recognition with Hariyali Aur Rasta in 1962. Over the years, he became synonymous with patriotic cinema, delivering iconic films like Shaheed, Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Kranti.

His directorial debut, Upkar, was inspired by Lal Bahadur Shastri's slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kisan" and celebrated the contributions of farmers and soldiers.

His best movies include Shaheed, where he portrayed freedom fighter Bhagat Singh; Purab Aur Paschim, which explored cultural identity; Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, addressing poverty and unemployment; and Kranti, a historical epic set during India's freedom struggle. 

He also starred in suspense thrillers like Woh Kaun Thi? and Gumnaam, showcasing his range as an actor. His contributions to Indian cinema were recognized with numerous awards, including the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. 

He won the National Film Award for Upkar and received multiple Filmfare Awards for his work as an actor, director, and scriptwriter.
