Asha Bhosle

Asha Bhosle (born 8 September 1933 in Sangli, Maharashtra) is widely regarded as one of the greatest playback singers in Indian cinema, with a career spanning over eight decades. She is also known as an entrepreneur, actress, and television personality, celebrated for her versatility across genres and languages.  

Asha Bhosle was born as Asha Mangeshkar into the renowned Mangeshkar family. Her father, Deenanath Mangeshkar, was a classical musician and stage actor, and she grew up surrounded by music.

She began singing at a young age, making her playback debut in 1943. She is the younger sister of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, and together they shaped the soundscape of Indian cinema for generations. 

She married Ganpatrao Bhosle in 1949, but the marriage ended in separation. Later, she married celebrated music composer R. D. Burman in 1980, with whom she collaborated on numerous iconic songs until his death in 1994. She has three children, including the late journalist and singer Varsha Bhosle.  

Her career is marked by extraordinary versatility. She has sung in over 20 Indian languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, and Malayalam. Her repertoire spans filmi songs, ghazals, qawwalis, bhajans, folk, pop, classical, and Rabindra Sangeet.

Known for her ability to adapt to changing musical trends, she became the voice behind countless Bollywood heroines from the 1950s through the 2000s.  

She recorded thousands of songs, earning recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records in 2011 as the most recorded artist in music history. Some of her most famous songs include “Piya Tu Ab To Aaja” (Caravan, 1971), “Dum Maro Dum” (Hare Rama Hare Krishna, 1972), and “Yeh Mera Dil” (Don, 1978).  

Beyond playback singing, Asha Bhosle ventured into acting, appearing in films such as Mai (2013). She also became a television personality, serving as a judge on popular singing reality shows, where she mentored aspiring artists. As an entrepreneur, she launched the Asha’s restaurant chain, which specializes in Indian cuisine and has outlets in several countries.  

Asha Bhosle has received numerous accolades, including:  

• Nine Filmfare Awards, with a record seven wins for Best Female Playback Singer.
• Two National Film Awards for Umrao Jaan (1981) and Ijaazat (1986).  
• Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000), India’s highest honor in cinema.  
• Padma Vibhushan (2008), the country’s second-highest civilian award.  
• Maharashtra Bhushan (2021) and Banga Bibhushan (2018) for her cultural contributions.  
• Two Grammy nominations, reflecting her global recognition.  

Her passing in April 2026 at the age of 92 marked the end of an era, but her songs continue to resonate with millions worldwide, ensuring her legacy as one of the most versatile and beloved voices in Indian music.
