Madhu, born Madhavan Nair on September 23, 1933, in Gourishapattom, Trivandrum, Kerala, India, is a revered Indian actor, director, and producer primarily associated with Malayalam cinema.
He is regarded as one of the most prominent and versatile figures in the Malayalam film industry, with a career spanning over five decades during which he acted in more than 400 films across Malayalam, Hindi, and Tamil languages. He has also directed 12 films and produced 15 films, earning widespread acclaim for his contributions to regional cinema.
Before embarking on his film career, he was an English lecturer at S.T. Hindu College and Scott Christian College in Nagercoil.
Inspired by a passion for acting, he enrolled at the National School of Drama, after which he made his acting debut in the 1963 Malayalam film "Ninamaninja Kalpadukal," playing the role of Stephen, an Indian army soldier. Following this, he acted in "Moodupadam," further establishing himself in Malayalam cinema.

His breakthrough came with the 1965 classic "Chemmeen," where he portrayed Pareekkutty, a role that brought him significant acclaim and won the President's Gold Medal for Best Feature Film. Known for portraying a wide range of characters, he seamlessly balanced commercial and parallel cinema, appearing in films such as "Bhargavi Nilayam," "Udhyogastha," "Virunnukari," "Swayamvaram," and "Olavum Theeravum."
As a director, he made his debut with "Priya" in 1970, which was a trendsetter in Malayalam cinema and won critical acclaim. He went on to direct popular films like "Sindooracheppu," "Manya Shree Vishwamitran," "Neela Kannukal," and "Aaradhana," many of which he also produced.
His produced film "Mini" won the Indira Gandhi National Award for Best Film on Family Welfare in 1995, highlighting his commitment to socially relevant cinema.
Madhu also ventured into Hindi and Tamil cinema, with notable appearances including the Hindi film "Saat Hindustani" (1969), marking Amitabh Bachchan's debut, and Tamil films such as "Dharma Dorai" alongside Rajinikanth.
Recognized for his dignity, versatility, and dedication, Madhu was honored with the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013 and received the J.C. Daniel Award in 2004 for his lifetime contribution to Malayalam cinema.
