Sam Pitroda

Sam Pitroda, born Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda on November 17, 1942, in Titlagarh, Odisha, India, is a renowned telecommunications engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, and policymaker credited with laying the foundation for India's telecommunications revolution.

He was born into a Gujarati family deeply influenced by Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy. Pitroda completed his bachelor's degree and master's in physics and electronics from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara, Gujarat, before moving to the United States for higher studies. He earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago.

His early career included work at General Telephone & Electronics Corporation (GTE) in Chicago from 1966 and involvement in pioneering projects related to portable computing, including the invention of an electronic diary in 1975. In 1984, at the behest of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he returned to India and founded the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), which played a crucial role in advancing India's domestic telecommunications infrastructure.

During the tenure of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, he served as a technical advisor and was instrumental in revolutionizing India's telecom policies. He helped introduce Public Call Offices (PCOs) across the country, significantly expanding telephone access in urban and rural areas.

He also founded India's Telecom Commission in 1987 and contributed to shaping technology policy and innovation in India.
