Tanuja Mukherjee, popularly known as Tanuja, was born on September 23, 1943, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Bombay Presidency, British India. She is a distinguished Indian actress primarily known for her work in Hindi cinema, as well as Bengali and Marathi films.
She is a member of the illustrious Mukherjee-Samarth family, being the daughter of actress Shobhna Samarth and producer Kumarsen Samarth, and the younger sister of famed actress Nutan. She married filmmaker Shomu Mukherjee, with whom she had two daughters, Kajol and Tanisha, both of whom have pursued acting careers.
Tanuja began her film career as a child artist in the movie "Hamari Beti" (1950), which starred her elder sister Nutan in the lead. As an adult actress, she debuted in the 1960 film "Chhabili," directed by her mother.
Her breakthrough role came with "Hamari Yaad Aayegi" (1961), directed by Kidar Sharma, which marked her transition to a leading heroine. She gained acclaim for her performance in "Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi" (1966), a film noted for the subtlety and naturalism she brought to her role under the guidance of the Guru Dutt team.
