She began her Bharatanatyam training at the age of eight and quickly gained recognition for her talent. However, her life took a dramatic turn in 1981 when she was involved in a road accident near Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu.
The accident resulted in her right leg becoming gangrenous, leading to its amputation. Despite this setback, her determination and resilience saw her return to dancing with the help of a prosthetic Jaipur foot. Her comeback performance in Mumbai in 1984 was highly acclaimed, establishing her as one of India's best Bharatanatyam dancers.
Her acting career began with the Telugu film "Mayuri" in 1984, which was based on her own life story. Her performance in the film earned her the National Film Award – Special Jury Award in 1986.
