Mahua Roychoudhury, born on 24 September 1958 in Dum Dum, West Bengal, was one of the most acclaimed actresses in Bengali cinema during the 1970s and early 1980s. Her birth name was Shipra Roy Choudhury, and she was discovered by renowned director Tarun Majumdar, who named her Mahua.
Coming from a lower middle-class background, she inherited her love for dance from her father, Nilanjan Roy Chowdhury, who was a dancer. Economic hardships limited her formal education, but her artistic talent led her to make her film debut in Tarun Majumdar’s “Sriman Pritthiraj” in 1972 at a very young age.
She soon became a household name, celebrated for her “next-door girl” persona and natural acting style. She appeared in hit films alongside industry legends such as Uttam Kumar, Deepankar De, Santu Mukherjee, Samit Bhanja, and Tapas Pal, among many others.

Her skills extended beyond acting to both classical and contemporary dance, earning her a unique place among her contemporaries. Actresses Sabitri Chatterjee and Sandhya Roy helped mentor and refine her craft, which contributed to her meteoric rise in Bengali cinema.
In 1976, Mahua Roychoudhury married actor Tilak Chakraborty, and the couple had a son named Tamal. Her critically acclaimed performance in Tapan Sinha’s “Aadmi Aur Aurat” with Amol Palekar marked a turning point in her career, winning her praise for her acting depth and helping dispel her “box office star” reputation.
She received a Filmfare Award for Best Actress for “Dadar Kirti” in 1980, and was posthumously honored with the Best Actress Award for “Aadmi Aur Aurat” at the Damascus International Film Festival in 1987. By the early 1980s, she was so popular that Bengali films often relied on her star power to ensure commercial success, with movies like “Lal Golap” in 1983 credited with rejuvenating the industry.
Her promising career was tragically cut short on 22 July 1985, following a fatal accident at her residence under circumstances that remain mysterious to this day. At the time of her untimely death, she was only 26 years old and was involved in about fifteen ongoing film projects.
Several films featuring Mahua, including “Anurager Choya,” “Prem O Paap,” “Abhimaan,” “Ashirbaad,” “Kenaram Becharam,” and “Abir,” were released posthumously.
