Her father, Boney Kapoor, is a renowned film producer, and her mother, Sridevi, was a legendary actress who acted in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam movies. She has a younger sister, Khushi Kapoor, who is also an actress. From her father's first marriage, she has two half-siblings, Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor, who are also actors.

Janhvi completed her schooling at Ecole Mondiale World School in Mumbai. To pursue her passion for acting, she took an acting course from the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in California.

Janhvi made her acting debut in 2018 with the romantic drama "Dhadak", co-starring Ishaan Khatter. The film was a commercial success, grossing over ₹1.1 billion worldwide. Her performance in the movie won her the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut.

She then starred in Zoya Akhtar's segment in the Netflix horror anthology film "Ghost Stories" in 2020. The same year, she played the title role of aviator Gunjan Saxena in the biopic "Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl" which premiered on Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
