Chithra (born May 21, 1965, in Kochi, Kerala, India; died August 21, 2021, in Saligramam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu) was a prominent South Indian actress known for her work predominantly in Malayalam and Tamil films, with significant contributions to Telugu and Kannada cinema as well.

She was born to parents Madhavan and Devi as the second of three children, with an older sister and a younger sister named Divya.

She studied at ICF Higher Secondary School in Chennai and completed her education up to the tenth grade before dedicating herself fully to her acting career, as she became too busy with films to continue her studies.

Chithra began her film career at a young age and became a busy artist during the 1980s and 1990s, acting as the lead lady in numerous Malayalam movies alongside superstars Mohanlal, Mammootty, and Suresh Gopi.

In Tamil cinema, she paired with major actors including Sivaji Ganeshan, Rajnikanth, Prabhu, Kamal Haasan, Sarath Kumar, and Vijayakanth. She was also a strong presence in Telugu and Kannada movies, acting in over 100 films throughout her career.

She was sometimes called "Malani Chithra" after her famous advertisement for an oil company. Among her notable films are Kalikkalam (1990), Kaadhalan (1994), Aaram Thamburan (1997), and Rudraksham (1994).

Chithra was married to actor Vijayaraghavan in 1991, and they had a daughter named Mahalaks in 1992. After her marriage, she eventually retired from cinema and settled in Chennai with her family.

On August 21, 2021, at the age of 55 or 56, Chithra breathed her last early Saturday morning following a massive cardiac arrest at her residence in Saligramam, Chennai. Her death was mourned by film fans across South India, marking the end of a remarkable career that left a lasting impact on South Indian cinema.
