Fans of the cult classic 3 Idiots can finally rejoice - Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that a sequel is in development, picking up the story with a 10-year time leap.
In a recent interview with Amar Ujala, the Bollywood superstar revealed that the script, penned by Rajkumar Hirani (Raju) and Abhijat Joshi, follows beloved characters Rancho, Farhan, and Raju a decade after their chaotic college days.
"Raju is working on 3 Idiots 2 right now. I’ve heard the story and it’s wonderful," Aamir Khan shared, building excitement among audiences who have clamored for a follow-up since the 2009 blockbuster's release.
He praised the narrative as "a beautiful story - unusual, with the same humour as the first film," though he noted the script still needs polishing. Aamir khan expressed personal enthusiasm for reprising his iconic role as the enigmatic Phunsukh Wangdu, saying, "I’m looking forward to it, and to playing Phunsukh Wangdu again."
The announcement comes amid Aamir's busy slate. He was previously slated to reunite with Hirani for a biopic on Indian cinema pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke, but the project has been shelved due to script issues. Buzz is also swirling about Aamir potentially portraying entrepreneur Ashneer Grover in another biopic, reportedly starring Shraddha Kapoor and directed by Rahul Mody - though no official word yet.
Currently, Aamir khan is focused on promoting his son Junaid Khan's debut film Ek Din, co-starring Sai Pallavi, set for theatrical release on May 1.
With 3 Idiots still resonating for its message on chasing passion over pressure, this sequel could deliver another timeless hit. Stay tuned for updates as the project takes shape.
