Vivek Anand Oberoi was born on September 3, 1976, in Hyderabad, Telangana, to a Punjabi father, Suresh Oberoi, a renowned actor. His mother, Yashodhara Oberoi, hails from a Punjabi business family settled in Chennai. He has a younger sister named Meghna Oberoi, who is a singer and painter.
Vivek Oberoi is fluent in Tamil due to his mother's family being assimilated in the region. He studied at Mayo College, Ajmer, and Mithibai College, Mumbai. Later, he completed his master's degree in film acting in New York, after being spotted by the director of New York University at an actors' workshop in London.
Vivek Oberoi made his acting debut in 2002 with starring roles in the Hindi crime film "Company" and the romantic drama "Saathiya". His performances were highly praised, earning him two Filmfare Awards for "Company".
He subsequently had intermittent commercial successes in the comedy "Masti" (2004), the horror film "Kaal" (2005), and the action film "Shootout at Lokhandwala" (2007).
