Shaheen Sheik

Shaheen Sheik (born June 17, 1975) is an American singer, songwriter, producer, dancer, and actor based in Los Angeles, California. Her musical work spans multiple genres, including rock/pop, electronic, and chill-out music.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Iqbal Sheik, a psychiatrist, and Sharfudheen Sheik, a mechanical engineer. She grew up in Cleveland and Los Angeles, though her family traces its roots to Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India.

She has an older brother named Zafar Sheik, who is a doctor working in Warren, Ohio. As a child, she studied classical dance and later began studying vocal music, guitar, and sarod. During her teenage years, her family moved to Orange, California.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley, and subsequently studied law at the University of Virginia School of Law. After graduating from law school in 2000, she decided not to pursue a legal career and instead dedicated herself to her musical career. She first gained recognition as a singer and performer after giving a concert at Lush's Hall in San Francisco.

In 2003, she released her first album, Live from Santosha, which was recorded and edited live in Los Angeles at the Genghis Cohen festival. She later released the albums Rock Candy in 2005 and Revolution in 2008, both receiving national and international acclaim. Her work earned her recognition as one of LA's Star 98.7 FM Top 100 Unsigned Artists, and her music received regular rotation on MTV Desi and MTV India.

After becoming a mother, she shifted her musical focus toward exploring Eastern melodies. Since 2010, she has collaborated with Swedish producer Soul Avenue, releasing music globally including on the Buddha Bar compilations mixed by renowned DJ Ravin. Their most recent song, "Refugee," was released on Buddha Bar Summer of Chill in June 2020.
