He was born in Durgapur, West Bengal, into a musical family; his father, Ajmer Singh Chandan, is a classical musician, and his mother, Balbir Kaur, is a scholar of folk music. He is the youngest of six Mehndi brothers, and his older brother is the renowned Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehndi.
