Javed Ali

Javed Ali (born Javed Hussain on 5 July 1982) is an Indian playback singer known for his versatile voice across Bollywood and regional Indian cinema.

He has sung in multiple languages and is recognized for both film songs and devotional and live-performance work.

Javed Ali was born and raised in Delhi in a musical family and began singing at an early age under the encouragement of his father, Ustad Hamid Hussain, a qawwali singer. He received further guidance from ghazal maestro Ghulam Ali, who mentored him and invited him to perform at concerts; in tribute to his guru he adopted the professional name Javed Ali.

He moved to Mumbai in the late 1990s to pursue playback singing, returning briefly to Delhi while his voice matured before settling permanently in Mumbai around 2000. He recorded his first film song in 2000, and over the next several years sang for smaller projects and advertisement jingles while building industry connections.

His public breakthrough came in the mid-2000s when he recorded the song “Ek Din Teri Raahon Mein” for the film Naqaab (2007), which brought him wider recognition. His rendition of “Jashn-e-Bahaara” for the historical drama Jodhaa Akbar (2008) became a major milestone and won him industry acclaim and awards.

Following these successes, he became a regularly sought voice for Bollywood soundtracks and recorded notable songs including devotional and Sufi-influenced pieces as well as romantic and contemporary film tracks.

He is noted for a warm, emotive tenor and an ability to adapt to classical, Sufi, romantic, and pop idioms; he blends classical sensibilities with the requirements of film music. While he is primarily known for Hindi film songs, his discography includes recordings in several Indian languages, reflecting a pan-Indian presence in playback singing and regional cinema.

Beyond studio playback work, Javed Ali has remained active on stage, performing concerts, Sufi nights, and music festivals nationally and internationally. He has also appeared as a judge and mentor on televised singing competitions and released devotional albums and singles, expanding his presence outside mainstream film music.

His performances have earned him industry awards and nominations, particularly following his breakthrough songs in the late 2000s. His work on prominent film soundtracks and popular singles established him as one of the recognizable contemporary playback voices in Indian cinema.
