Abhay Ashtekar

Abhay Ashtekar is an Indian-American theoretical physicist born on 5 July 1949 in Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India.

He is best known as the creator of the Ashtekar variables, a reformulation of general relativity that became foundational for loop quantum gravity and later loop quantum cosmology.

Abhay Ashtekar studied in India before moving to the United States for graduate work in gravitation at the University of Texas at Austin, and he completed his doctorate at the University of Chicago under Robert Geroch. He later held academic positions in the United States and abroad, including appointments at Syracuse University, Paris VI, and Pennsylvania State University.

At Penn State, he has served as Director of the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos and as the Eberly Professor of Physics. His research has played a major role in the development of quantum gravity, and he is also known for work on black hole entropy in loop quantum gravity.

He has received major honors for his scientific contributions, including recognition from the American Physical Society and election-related honors from scientific academies. He has also been active in international scientific leadership, including service as president of the International Society for General Relativity and Gravitation.

He married Christine Clarke in 1986, and they have one son, Neil Ashtekar.
