P. V. Sindhu

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, born on 5 July 1995, is an Indian badminton player from Hyderabad, Telangana, and one of the most accomplished athletes in Indian badminton. She began playing the sport at the age of eight and later trained under Pullela Gopichand, whose academy played a major role in developing her career.

She rose through the junior ranks quickly and began representing India internationally in 2009. She gained wider attention after strong performances in junior and senior tournaments, including success at the Asian Junior Championships and other early-career events.

Her first major global breakthrough came at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she won the silver medal in women’s singles, becoming the first Indian woman to win an Olympic silver in badminton. She later won bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, making her the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals.

In 2019, she won gold at the BWF World Championships, becoming the first Indian to become world champion in badminton. She has also won medals at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and several BWF tournaments, establishing herself as one of India’s most decorated badminton players.

PV Sindhu has received major Indian honors for her achievements, including the Padma Shri, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, and the Padma Bhushan.

Her career is widely seen as a landmark for Indian women’s sport, both for her consistency at the highest level and for the records she set on the international stage.
