Pankaj Kapur

Pankaj Kapur is a highly respected Indian actor, director, and playwright born on May 29, 1954, in Ludhiana, Punjab, India.

He is renowned for his exceptional contributions to Indian cinema, television, and theater, with a career spanning over four decades. Kapur is known for his versatility, nuanced performances, distinctive style, and deep commitment to the craft of acting.

He initially studied engineering in New Delhi, where he graduated as a topper in his college. He later joined the prestigious National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi and graduated from it in 1976, receiving the Best Actor Award during his time there. After completing his graduation from NSD, he practiced theater for four years before developing a desire to become a film actor.

He made his acting debut with Shyam Benegal's film "Arohan" in 1982. He subsequently played the role of Pyarelal in Richard Attenborough's epic film "Gandhi" (1982). In the 1980s, he became a household name through the popular TV series "Karamchand," a comedy detective series where he portrayed the character Jasoos Karamchand. In the new millennium, he gained widespread acclaim for "Office Office" (2000), a comic satire on prevalent corruption in India.

He has delivered several notable film performances throughout his career. He played Dipankar Roy in "Ek Doctor Ki Maut" (1991) and Abba ji (based on King Duncan from Shakespeare's "Macbeth") in Vishal Bhardwaj's Hindi adaptation "Maqbool" (2004). Both "Ek Doctor Ki Maut" and "Maqbool," along with another performance, earned Kapur National Film Awards. He has appeared in Bollywood, Punjabi, Tamil, and English films.

He was first married to actress Neelima Azeem, and their son is actor Shahid Kapoor. He divorced Neelima in 1984 and later married his co-actress Supriya Pathak (known for her role as Kitty) in 1986.

With Supriya Pathak, he has two children named Ruhaan Kapoor and Sanah Kapoor. Kapur remains a towering figure in Indian cinema and theater, recognized as one of the finest actors Indian cinema and theatre have ever seen.
