Ekta Kapoor (born Ekta J. Kapoor on June 7, 1975, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India) is an Indian television and film producer widely regarded as the Queen of Indian Television.
She is the creative head, Joint Managing Director, and Creative Director of Balaji Telefilms, the production company founded by her mother Shobha Kapoor. She is the eldest daughter of legendary Bollywood actor Jeetendra and has a younger brother, actor Tusshar Kapoor.
Ekta Kapoor attended Bombay Scottish School in Mahim and later graduated from Mithibai College. She began her career at the age of 15 as an intern at an advertising agency and started producing television content at 17.

With her father's advice and financial support, she launched her own TV-serial production business called Balaji Creations. Her early attempts included six pilots and three episodes that were all rejected, but she eventually succeeded with the serial Hum Paanch, which became her first major hit.
Her most famous and influential television venture is Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which premiered on STAR Plus in 2000 and became a cultural phenomenon, running for eight years. She has produced or co-produced numerous other popular soap operas and series, including Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki, Kasautii Zindagii Kay, Pavitra Rishta, Bade Acche Lagte Hain, Naagin, Kumkum Bhagya, and Savdhaan India.

She further ventured into digital media by launching ALT Balaji, a video-on-demand platform, under ALT Digital Media Entertainment, producing web series like Dev DD, Gandii Baat, and BOSS.
Her entrepreneurial success and influence in the media industry have earned her numerous prestigious awards and honors. She received the Ernst & Young Startup Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2001, the Economic Times Businesswoman of the Year in 2002, and the American Biographical Institute’s Woman of the Year in 2001.
She was ranked first among the “50 Most Influential Women” in India’s marketing, advertising, and media ecosystems by IMPACT magazine in 2016 and featured in Fortune India’s Top 50 Powerful Women in India in 2014 and 2015. In 2020, she was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for her contribution to the arts.
She has also received multiple Indian Telly Awards, Business Today’s Most Powerful Women in Indian Business Awards, and the Sterling Icon of Entertainment at the ITA Awards. In 2018, she was awarded the IWM Digital Awards as Web Person of the Year and the FLO Icon Award at the 34th Annual session of FICCI Ladies Organisation.
Ekta Kapoor is married and has a son named Ravie. Her net worth is estimated at around ₹95 crore. She currently leads the Confederation of Indian Industries’ (CII) entertainment committee and remains one of the most influential figures in Indian entertainment history.
