Tara Deshpande

Tara Deshpande (born 1975) is an Indian actress, former model and MTV video jockey who later became an author, chef and food writer.

She began her public career in modeling and as one of the first VJs when MTV launched in India, and moved into acting in the mid-1990s with roles that earned critical attention.

After establishing herself in film and theatre she relocated to the United States following her marriage, trained in culinary arts, and built a second career as a cook, catering entrepreneur and cookbook author.

Tara Deshpande was born and raised in Mumbai into a Maharashtrian family and attended prominent schools in the city before going on to higher studies at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai. She began performing in theatre as a teenager and took part in stage productions prior to entering modelling and television.

Her early exposure to both dramatic arts and the city’s cosmopolitan food culture later shaped her dual careers in performance and food writing.

She worked as a model in Mumbai and was among the first generation of VJs on MTV India, where she presented music and youth-oriented programming that raised her public profile. Her on-screen persona and visibility on television opened opportunities in film and independent theatre and positioned her within India’s 1990s cultural scene.

She also hosted and participated in other television projects during this period, establishing a reputation for wit and urbane presentation.

She made her film debut in Sudhir Mishra’s Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin, a 1996 film that became notable in independent Hindi cinema, and she appeared in other films including Bombay Boys and Style, earning recognition for roles that ranged from gritty drama to urban comedies.

In theatre she continued to perform in plays and collaborated with directors and playwrights active in Bombay’s English- and Marathi-language theatre circuits. Her acting work from the late 1990s is remembered for its association with the era’s offbeat, character-driven films.

After marrying Daniel Tennebaum in 2001, Tara Deshpande moved to the Boston area and later spent time between the United States and Mumbai. While in the U.S. she trained formally in culinary arts, taught at culinary programs, and launched a catering business, building a professional identity as a chef and food entrepreneur.

Her work in food combined practical culinary skills with an interest in food history and regional Indian cuisines, especially the Konkan traditions linked to her background.

She published her first book of short stories, Fifty and Done, as a young writer; she later turned to food writing with titles that blend recipes, memoir and cultural commentary. Her books include A Sense for Spice: Recipes and Stories from a Konkan Kitchen and An Indian Sense of Salad, among other contributions to food anthologies and journalism.

She has also experimented with digital storytelling and contributed food and lifestyle pieces to newspapers and magazines.

In the United States she ran a catering firm and taught culinary classes while continuing to write about food and culture, and she appeared in interviews and festival panels relating to food, copyright and creative industries.

She has taken part in culinary demonstrations and media projects that highlight traditional Indian ingredients and contemporary approaches to cooking. She divides her time between culinary projects, writing and occasional media appearances.

Tara Deshpande married Daniel Tennebaum, an American, in 2001 and subsequently relocated to the Boston area; the marriage and move marked a transition from a Mumbai-based entertainment career to a U.S.-based culinary and writing life.

She is remembered for her role in 1990s Indian independent cinema and for being among the early VJs who shaped youth television in India. Her later credentials as a cookbook author and chef have been praised for bringing attention to regional Indian flavours and for presenting them through personal narrative and accessible recipes.
