Tannishtha Chatterjee

Tannishtha Chatterjee is an Indian actress, director, and writer known for her work in both Indian and international cinema. She was born on November 23, 1980, in Pune, Maharashtra, India, and comes from a Bengali Hindu family.

She studied chemistry at Delhi University and later trained at the National School of Drama in New Delhi. Before becoming widely recognized as an actor, she made her feature film debut in Swaraj in 2003.

She gained wider international attention for her performance in Sarah Gavron’s Brick Lane (2007), which earned her a nomination for a British Independent Film Award for Best Actress. She also received acclaim for roles in films such as Shadows of Time and Bibar, and she has worked with a range of Indian and international filmmakers.

Her filmography includes notable titles such as Road, Movie, Gulaab Gang, Jal, Parched, Angry Indian Goddesses, Island City, Monsoon Shootout, Beyond the Clouds, and Joram. She is especially associated with independent and parallel cinema, where her performances have often been praised for their depth and restraint.

In addition to acting, she is a trained Indian classical singer. She made her directorial debut with Roam Rome Mein in 2018, and later continued working as a filmmaker; she was also reported to have been involved with Full Plate as a second directorial project.
