Swara Bhaskar

Swara Bhaskar (born 9 April 1988) is an Indian film and stage actress known for her work in Hindi cinema and for performances in independent and mainstream films.She has been recognized for playing strong, often unconventional female characters and for her outspoken views on social and political issues.

Swara Bhaskar was born on 9 April 1988 in New Delhi into a culturally engaged family; her mother, Ira Bhaskar, is an academic who taught cinema studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, and her father, Chitrapu Uday Bhaskar, served in the Indian Navy.

She attended Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in New Delhi and went on to study English literature at Miranda House, University of Delhi, before completing a master’s degree in sociology at Jawaharlal Nehru University. During her time in Delhi she trained in theatre and worked with local stage groups, which laid the foundation for her acting career.

She began her film career with small roles and appearances in theatre and independent projects before moving into mainstream Hindi films. Her early screen appearances included the English-language film Madholal Keep Walking and later a supporting role that brought wider attention in commercially successful films.

She gained notable recognition for her role as Payal in the romantic comedy-drama Tanu Weds Manu (and its later installments), and for character roles in films such as Raanjhanaa, Nill Battey Sannata (Nil Battey Sannata), and Veere Di Wedding.

Across these projects she has alternated between mainstream commercial cinema and socially conscious independent films, earning critical praise and several award nominations for her performances.
