She moved to Visakhapatnam with her family at the age of three. Her father, Venugopal Rao, was a Merchant Navy engineer, and her mother, Santha Kamakshi, was a primary school teacher. Sobhita earned her degree from the University of Mumbai.
She began her career as a model and beauty pageant titleholder. She won the Femina Miss India Earth 2013 title at the Femina Miss India 2013 pageant and represented India at Miss Earth 2013. This achievement made her an Indian supermodel and former Miss Earth India winner.

Her acting debut came in 2016 with Anurag Kashyap's Hindi thriller film "Raman Raghav 2.0" (also known as "Psycho Raman"), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. At Cannes, she earned a best supporting performance nomination. In the film, she played the role of Smrutika Naidu.
Her breakthrough in television came with her role as Tara Khanna in the Amazon Prime Video drama series "Made in Heaven" (2019–2023), where she starred in the lead role. She continued to gain recognition for her role as Kaveri 'K' Dixit in "The Night Manager," an official adaptation of the UK counterpart.
