Ranjana Deshmukh

Ranjana Deshmukh (23 July 1955 – 3 March 2000) was a popular Indian actress who dominated the Marathi silver screen during the 1970s and 1980s, known on-screen simply as Ranjana.

She was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, and was the niece of noted Hindi actress Sandhya and the granddaughter of former Indian Finance Minister C. D. Deshmukh. Her mother was Vatsala Deshmukh.

She was introduced to cinema by renowned filmmaker V. Shantaram in the 1975 Marathi film Chandanachi Choli Ang Ang Jaali, which was directed by Kiran Shantaram. She subsequently starred in the lead role in Shantaram's next film, Jhunj (also spelled Zhunjar), in the same year.

Her performance earned her the State Government's Best Actress award in 1980 for Are Sansar Sansar, and she won the award again in 1983 for Gup Chup Gup Chup. Other key films in her repertoire include Sushila, Gondhalat Gondhal, Mumbaicha Faujdar, Bin Kamacha Navra, Khichdi, Chani, Jakhmi Vaghin, Bhujang, and Ek Daav Bhutacha.

She also appeared in Telugu cinema, including Daana Veera Soora Karna (1977), and Hindi films such as Jhanjaar (1986) and had a supporting role in Yeh Dillagi (1994). She formed hit pairs at the box office with prominent Marathi actors including Ashok Saraf, Avinash Masurekar, Shriram Lagoo, Kuldeep Pawar, Nilu Phule, Ravindra Mahajani, and Raja Gosavi.

Her career tragically ended in 1987 when she suffered a severe car accident while traveling to Bangalore for the shooting of Jhanjaar. Both of her legs were paralyzed in the crash, forcing her to spend the remaining 14 years of her life in a wheelchair.

She lived alone at Shivaji Park in Parel, Mumbai, and was described as very lonely during this period. Ranjana Deshmukh died of cardiac arrest on 3 March 2000 at Shivaji Park, Mumbai, at the age of 45.

The Maharashtra government later instituted a tribute award in her name, and Zee Talkies honored her by showcasing her films on 3 March 2011. A biopic titled Ranjana Unfold, directed by Abhijeet Mohan Warang, was released on 3 March 2023 as a tribute to her life and career.
