Rupini

Rupini (born Komal Mahuvakar on November 4, 1969) is a former Indian actress who worked primarily in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Hindi films during the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Born in Mumbai, she began her career as a child artist under her real name before transitioning to lead roles and adopting the stage name Rupini for her South Indian film work.

Rupini was accidentally spotted by acclaimed director Hrishikesh Mukherjee, who offered her child roles in his films Mili (1975), Kotwal Saab (1977), and Khubsoorat (1980). By 1980, as a pre-teen, she graduated to lead roles in Hindi films with Payal Ki Jhankaar, and subsequently appeared in hits like Meri Adalat (1984) and Awara Baap (1985), working alongside top heroes including Rishi Kapoor.

In 1987, Rupini made her Tamil and Telugu debut and officially adopted the name Rupini, marking the beginning of her South Indian film career. Her breakthrough Tamil film was Manithan (1987), where she played the lead role alongside super star Rajinikanth.

She subsequently acted with major South Indian stars including Kamal Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Vijayakanth. Notable films from this period include Cooliekkaran (1987), En Thangachi Padichava (1988), Apoorva Sagodharargal (1989), Michael Madana Kama Rajan (1990), and Madurai Veeran Enga Saami (1990).

Over the next eight years, she appeared frequently in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Kannada films, working opposite most top stars of the time. By the 1990s, she began taking supporting roles in films such as Namma Annachi. Her active period as a lead actress spanned from 1987 to 1994.

She stopped acting after getting married to Mohan Kumar in 1995, quitting her career at its peak. She made a brief comeback to acting in 2005, playing Sheetal in the Sahara One TV show Woh Rehne Waali Mehlon Ki after almost a decade.

Rupini returned to films in 2020 after a 26-year gap, featuring in the Tamil series Chithi 2. She is also known by her real name Komal Mahuvakar and occasionally by variations such as Roopini or Rubini.
