She was born on September 16, 1959, in Madras (now Chennai), Tamil Nadu, India. She began her career as a child actor, and her debut movie was Bhakta Prahlada (1967), in which she played the title role at the age of five.
For her performance in this film, she received the National Film Award for Best Child Artist, making her one of the youngest recipients of this honor. She became popular during the 1970s and early 1980s, acting in approximately 50 movies as a female lead across multiple South Indian language industries.

In Malayalam films, she was known by the screen name Shobana (also spelled Chemparathy Shobana). Her notable Malayalam works include Chemparathy (1972) and Pani Theeratha Veedu.
The film Chemparathy was later remade in Tamil as Paruva Kaalam (1974), where Ramani repeated her role and Kamal Haasan played the male lead. Among her most appreciated works are Bhakta Prahlada and Chemparathy, with songs like "Chakravarthini Ninakku Vendi" and the devotional song "Saranamayyappa" remaining popular even today.
