Reena Roy

Reena Roy was born on January 7, 1957, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, as the third child of her parents with siblings Raja, Barkha, and Anjali.

Her family was a cultural melting pot, with her father Sadiq Ali being of Muslim descent and her mother Sharda Rai (also known as Sharda H Rai) of Hindu descent. Her parents divorced after having four children together, and Reena came from a broken home.

Her birth name was originally Saira Ali, but her mother lovingly renamed her Roopa Rai. When she was set to make her debut in the late director BR Ishara's film "Nayi Duniya Naye Log," he played a pivotal role in shaping her on-screen identity and renamed her Reena Roy under his supervision, a name that would become a household entity soon.

Although "Nayi Duniya Naye Log" was never completed, BR Ishara's faith in Reena remained, and she made her film debut in 1972 alongside Danny Denzongpa and Vijay Arora in "Zaroorat".

Her career in the entertainment industry began in the early 1970s when she began as a model before transitioning to the big screen. "Zaroorat," a film with bold themes, catapulted Reena Roy into the spotlight and established her as a daring and versatile actress in the industry. She was one of the most popular actresses of Bollywood in the yesteryears and is noted for being the highest-paid actress during the 1970s and the early 1980s.

The actress who portrayed mostly lead roles during her career made her debut on the silver screen with "Zaroorat" in 1972 and performed leading roles in many films from 1972 to 1985.

Over the years, Reena Roy, in her illustrious career spanning nearly 30 years, starred in more than 80 films. At the peak of her career, the veteran star had a huge fan following, and she was one of the first actresses to do female-oriented roles.

Some of her most notable films include "Umar Qaid" (1975), "Kalicharan" (1976), "Jaani Dushman" (1979), "Ghulami" (1985), "Janam Kundli" (1995), and "Refugee" (2000). She became household famous through the superhit snake fantasy film "Nagin" (1976), in which Sunil Dutt, Firoz Khan, Kabir Bedi, Rekha, Mumtaz, and Yogita Bali also starred.

The song "Tere Sang Pyar Mein Nahi Todna" from "Nagin" remains superhit today. She also starred in several other superhit films including "Milap," "Raj Tilak," "Ajay," "Raj Kumar," "Aadmi Khilona Hai," "Inteha," "Arpan," "Andha Kanoon," "Apnapan," "Hathkadi," "Sanam Teri Kasan" (in which Kamal Haasan appeared), "Naukar Biwi Ka," "Baghavat" (with Dharmendra), "Jeeo Aur Jeene Do," "Dhanwan" (with Rajesh Khanna), "Rocky" (with Sanjay Dutt), "Vishwanath," and "Aasha" (with Jeetendra).

Reena Roy had a notable love affair with actor Shatrughan Sinha, and the two wanted to marry but could not due to social pressure. She later married cricketer Mohsin Khan. She fought with her husband for custody of their daughter Sanam Khan.

For her outstanding contribution to Indian cinema, Reena Roy was conferred with the prestigious Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. She disputed reports that her decision to enter films was to financially support her mother and siblings. She started acting in films in her early teens.
