She was born in Mumbai to Ravi Tandon, a Hindi film producer and director active in the 1970s and 1980s, and Veena Tandon. Her name "Raveena" is a combination of her parents' names, Ravi and Veena. Famous Bollywood villain Mac Mohan was her maternal uncle.

Before entering the acting world, she attended Jamnabai Narsee School in Juhu and studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree at Mithibai College in Bombay. She also worked as an intern helping advertising professional Prahlad Kakkar at Genesis PR, an advertising and public relations firm. Her first film break came due to her family's proximity to the Indian film industry.

She made her Bollywood debut in 1991 with the action film "Patthar Ke Phool," starring opposite Salman Khan. The film was a flop, and her next few films were also failures. She received the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut (also called Filmfare Lux New Face Award or Filmfare Award for New Face of the Year) for her performance in Patthar Ke Phool. It was only with "Andaz Apna Apna" (1994) that she tasted success.

The 1994 film "Mohra," in which she played Roma Singh opposite Akshay Kumar, made her a superstar and set her to become Bollywood's reigning actress. She also appeared in "Dilwale" (1994), which was a big hit at the box office.

However, she then began a tangled affair with co-star Akshay Kumar, and all her subsequent films flopped. Her arch-rival Karishma Kapoor had her fired from some top films, and by the end of 1995 her career was in tatters, reduced to the level of a starlet doing bit roles.

Her career revived with the huge hit "Ziddi" (1997), and she became a top-rung star again. She also appeared in "Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi," which was another hit film that helped get her career on track. She worked hard to transition to more serious roles and reaped the fruits of her labors with films like "Shool" (1999), "Bulandi" (2000), and "Aks" (2001). She received high critical acclaim for her performances in "Aks" (2001), "Satta" (2003), and "Shool" (1999).

For her performance in "Aks" (2001), where she played Raghavan's girlfriend, Tandon won the Filmfare Special Performance Award. She finally got her due by bagging the National Film Award for Best Actress for playing the protagonist in the critically acclaimed Hindi film "Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence" (2001), in which she portrayed a wife of an abusive husband named Durga Saikia.

Raveena Tandon began dating film distributor Anil Thadani during the making of her film "Stumped" (2003). Their engagement was announced in November 2003, and they got married in 2004. She adopted a daughter right after her break-up with Akshay Kumar.

In her later career, she appeared in various films including "K.G.F: Chapter 2" (2022), where she played Ramika Sen, one of her notable recent roles. She also appeared in "Bombay Velvet" (2015), "Bbuddah... Hoga Tera Baap" (2011), and "Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummeda" (2014).
