Ramya Krishnan (born 15 September 1970 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India), also credited as Ramya Krishna, is an Indian actress known predominantly for her work in Telugu and Tamil films, along with appearances in Kannada, Malayalam, and Hindi films.

She has appeared in more than 200 films across five South Indian languages throughout her career spanning over four decades.

Ramya Krishnan was born in Chennai into a Tamil-speaking family, with parents named Krishnan and Maya. She is the niece of the late Cho Ramaswamy, a renowned Tamil film actor, comedian, and former member of the Rajya Sabha (Member of Parliament).

In her early years, she received formal training in western dance, Bharathanatyam, and Kuchipudi dance forms and appeared in several stage performances.

She began her acting career in 1983 at the age of 13 in the Malayalam film Neram Pularumbol, though it had a delayed release in 1986. Her first released film was the Tamil movie Vellai Manasu in 1984-1985, where she made her acting debut as a lead character opposite Y.G. Mahendra while she was still studying in the 8th grade. Her first Telugu film was Bhalae Mithrulu of 1986.

After a series of failures in both Tamil and Telugu cinema, she achieved fame through K. Viswanath's Sutradharulu, a film that won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu.

She emerged as a leading actress in Telugu cinema and later became a commercial romantic diva through K. Raghavendra Rao's directorial movies including Alludugaru, Allari Mogudu, Major Chandrakanth, and Allari Priyudu. She played the role of a devoted wife of Sri Annamacharya in the film Annamayya, where Nagarjuna portrayed Sri Annamacharya.

Her most iconic and recognizable role came in 1999 when she played Neelambari in Rajinikanth's Padayappa, a character that became one of her most celebrated performances and won her the Best Actor Filmfare Award in Tamil. She also played significant roles in films like Ammoru, Pottu Amman, and Rajakali Amma.

In 1998, she played a leading role in Kante Koothurne Kanu and received a Nandi Award for Best Actress from the Government of Andhra Pradesh for her performance in the film.

She also won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in Telugu for the 2009 comedy drama Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam. Her biggest Kannada hits include Gadibidi Ganda and Mangalyam Tantunanena with Ravichandran. She worked in Malayalam films such as Orkkappurathu, Aryan, and Anuragi with Mohanlal, and enjoyed success in Kannada movies like Vishnuvardhan's Krishna Rukmini.

Her biggest box-office successes and most acclaimed performances came from her role as Rajamata Sivagami Devi in S.S. Rajamouli's blockbuster films Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017). Her performance in the Baahubali series was acclaimed by all and helped her gain international recognition.

She also appeared in notable recent films including Jailer (2023), Super Deluxe (2019), Guntur Kaaram, and Bangarraju (2022).

Throughout her career, she has won three Filmfare Awards, three Nandi Awards, and a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for her performances. She has portrayed diverse roles ranging from a glam doll to a caring wife, a devoted mother, an arrogant vamp, and even a goddess, showcasing remarkable versatility from an innocent village belle to a hip and happening female.

In addition to her film work, she has appeared in popular television series including Shaktimaan and Shrimaan Shrimati. She was married to Telugu film director Krishna Vamsi on June 12, 2003, and they have a son named Ritwik together.

She made her debut as a heroine in Hindi films with Yash Chopra's Parampara of 1993 and also acted in Khalnayak, Chaahat, Banarasi Babu, and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. She played a small role in the Hindi film Dayavan starring actor Vinod Khanna.

Throughout more than 40 years in the film industry, she has acted in over 260 Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu, and Hindi films, establishing herself as one of the most versatile and recognized actresses in South Indian cinema.
