Raima Sen

Raima Sen (born Raima Dev Varma on 7 November 1979 in Bombay, now Mumbai, India) is an Indian film actress who primarily works in Bengali and Hindi cinema.

She is the daughter of actress Moon Moon Sen and the granddaughter of Suchitra Sen, the revered “Mahanayika” (great heroine) of Bengali cinema.

Raima Sen began her acting career in 1999 with her feature-film debut in the Bollywood biographical drama Godmother, a critically acclaimed film starring Shabana Azmi. Following early appearances in Daman (2001) and the Bengali film Nil Nirjane (2003), she gained significant recognition for her role as Ashalata in Rituparno Ghosh’s award-winning adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s Chokher Bali (2003), where she starred alongside Aishwarya Rai. This performance marked her first major breakthrough in the industry.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, Raima Sen appeared in both leading and supporting roles in more than 60 films across Bengali and Hindi cinema. Notable Hindi films include the musical romantic drama Parineeta (2005), The Bong Connection (2006), Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007), Dus, Eklavya: The Royal Guard, and The Japanese Wife (2010).

In Bengali cinema, she is remembered for films such as Anuranan, Khela, Baishe Srabon (2011), Memories in March, Noukadubi (2011), and Maach Mishti & More (2013). She also ventured into South Indian cinema, starring in the Telugu film Dhairyam (2005) and the Malayalam historical drama Veeraputhran (2011).

As of 2016, Raima Sen had appeared in a total of 73 films, predominantly in the Bengali language. In later years, she continued working in both Bollywood and Bengali films, including projects such as 3 Dev, Om Puri’s final film Varanasi, and more recent works like The Vaccine War (2023) and NRI Wives – Grey Stories of Love vs Desires (2023).

In a 2018 interview, she stated that she would “never stop working in Bengali films,” emphasizing that Bengali cinema teaches her craft and allows her to collaborate with great filmmakers.
