Rakhee Gulzar

Rakhee Gulzar (born 15 August 1947 in Ranaghat, West Bengal, India) is an acclaimed Indian actress known for her versatile performances in Hindi and Bengali films over a career spanning nearly four decades.

Born on India's Independence Day into a Bengali-speaking family with no prior connections to the film industry, she achieved phenomenal success in her very first movie, the Bengali film "Bandhu Baran," in 1967.

Bollywood actor Sunil Dutt noticed her talent after her Bengali debut and recommended her for a lead role in "Reshma Aur Shera," though before that film's release, she had already appeared in "Jeevan Mrityu" and "Sharmeelee" opposite Dharmendra and Shashi Kapoor respectively.

Her on-screen pairing with Shashi Kapoor became particularly popular with audiences; they collaborated on nine films together, with four being critically acclaimed despite being box office flops and five becoming super-hits.

Over her career from 1967 through 2003, she acted in approximately 91 movies.

She received numerous prestigious awards for her performances, including two National Film Awards and three Filmfare Awards, along with accolades for her work in "Daag," "Tapasya," "Ram Lakhan," and "Shubhu Muhurat".

In 2003, she was honored with the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest civilian award, recognizing her contribution to the arts. She was notably the second-highest paid Hindi actress from 1970 to 1982, sharing this distinction with actors like Asha Parekh, Reena Roy, and Parveen Babi during different periods.

In her personal life, she was married young to Ajoy Biswas at age 16, but that marriage was short-lived and ended in divorce. She later married renowned poet, lyricist, and film director Gulzar (full name Sampoorna Singh Gulzar), and they have a daughter together, Meghna Gulzar, who became a film director.
