Priya Anand

Priya Anand (born 17 September 1986 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India) is an Indian actress and model who predominantly appears in Tamil films, with significant work in Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema.

She is the only child of Radha Anand, a Tamil mother, and Bharadwaj Anand, a father of half-Telugu and half-Marathi heritage. She was raised in both Chennai and Hyderabad, becoming fluent in Tamil and Telugu, and is also proficient in English, Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, and Spanish.

Priya Anand became fascinated with cinema from childhood and dreamed of working on technical aspects of filmmaking, though she never initially envisioned becoming an actor.

She moved to the United States to pursue higher studies, enrolling at the State University of New York (SUNY) Albany where she studied communications and journalism. After graduating in 2008, she returned to India and began a career in modeling, appearing in television advertisements for brands including Nutrine Maha Lacto, Prince Jewellery, and Cadbury Dairy Milk.

Her acting career began in 2009. Although she first signed the Tamil film Pugaippadam, its release was delayed, making her debut film the action-thriller Vaamanan.

She portrayed Divya, a simple girl-next-door character, in the film directed by Ahmed, which featured music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The song "Aedho Seigirai" picturised on her became her claim-to-fame and made her popular among Tamil audiences.

In 2010, three of her films released within a short span: Pugaippadam, where she played Shiney George, a Malayali Christian student; her first Telugu film Leader; and Rama Rama Krishna Krishna.

In Leader, directed by Sekhar Kammula, she portrayed Ratna Prabha, a television reporter, and her performance garnered overwhelming response despite limited screen presence . This role established her as a well-known actress in Telugu cinema.

Priya Anand made her Hindi debut in 2012 with the critically acclaimed film English Vinglish, where she played Radha Desai alongside her idol Sridevi. Her portrayal earned her nominations for both the Zee Cine Award and Star Guild Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

She subsequently appeared in Hindi films Fukrey (2013), where she played Priya Sharma, and Rangrezz (2013).

In Tamil cinema, she played the lead role of Geetha in Ethir Neechal (2013) alongside Sivakarthikeyan, a film that became a box-office winner. She also starred in Vanakkam Chennai (2013), Arima Nambi (2014), Irumbu Kuthirai (2014), Oru Oorla Rendu Raja (2014), and Vai Raja Vai (2015).

She debuted in Malayalam cinema with the horror thriller Ezra (2017) starring Prithviraj . Her Kannada debut came with Raajakumara (2017), where she played Nandini opposite Puneeth Rajkumar, and she won over Kannada audiences with this first film.

She continued working across languages with Kootathil Oruthan (2017, Tamil), Fukrey Returns (2017, Hindi), Kayamkulam Kochunni (2018, Malayalam), Orange (2018, Kannada), and Adithya Varma (2019, Tamil).

In recent years, she appeared in the blockbuster Leo (2023) directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the political satire LKG (2019), and Andhagan (2024), where her performance as Julie earned her a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress in Tamil.

She also worked in television series including A Simple Murder (2020, Hindi), Maa Neella Tank (2022, Telugu), and The Mystery of Moksha Island (2024, Telugu).

On 20 June 2011, Priya Anand became an ambassador for the Save the Children campaign for both Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
