Nutan, born Nutan Samarth Behl on June 4, 1936, in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, was a legendary Bollywood actress regarded as one of the finest female actors in the history of Hindi cinema.

She was born into a prominent film family; her father, Kumarsen Samarth, was a filmmaker, and her mother, Shobhna Samarth, was a renowned actress and producer. Her younger sister, Tanuja, also became a celebrated actress, and Tanuja's daughter is the famous actress Kajol.

She began her career at the age of 14 as a child artist in the 1950 film Hamari Beti, which was directed by her mother Shobhna Samarth.

In 1951, she was crowned Miss India, becoming the first woman to receive this title. By the late 1950s, she had become a household name in India, establishing herself as a bold and versatile actress known for taking on unconventional roles. Her films spanned various genres over nearly four decades, during which she appeared in more than 50 films.

Among her most noteworthy performances were in films such as Sujata, Bandini, Milan, Main Tulsi Tere Aangan Ki, Sone Ki Chidiya, and Saraswatichandra.

Her role in Bandini (1963), in which she played a young prisoner, is widely considered her best performance. She worked with prominent actors including Dilip Kumar, whom she first acted opposite in the 1986 blockbuster Karma, and Dev Anand in popular films like Paying Guest, Baarish, Manzil, and Tere Ghar Ke Samne.

Her acting prowess was recognized with numerous accolades, including a record five Filmfare Awards for Best Actress. In 1974, she was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth-highest civilian award in India, by the Indian Government for her contribution to Indian cinema. She married naval Lieutenant-Commander Rajnish Behl in October 1959.

Her last film to be released while she was alive was Kanoon Apna Apna (1989), and two films, Naseebwala (1992) and Insaniyat (1994), were released after her death.

Nutan passed away on February 21, 1991, due to cancer. Her legacy endures as one of Bollywood's most respected actresses, with her daughter Vidya Behl and granddaughter continuing connections to the industry.
