Mita Vashisht (born 2 November 1967) is an acclaimed Indian actress renowned for her versatile performances across theater, television, and film in India. She was born in Pune, Maharashtra, to Rajeshwar Dutt Vashisht, a retired Colonel in the Indian Army, and Meenakshi Mehta Vashisht, a teacher and musician.

She completed her postgraduate degree in literature from Punjab University in Chandigarh before pursuing professional training in acting.

She graduated from the National School of Drama in New Delhi in 1987, where she honed her skills in theatrical performance. Her strong educational foundation in both literature and drama provided her with the versatility to excel in diverse acting roles across multiple mediums.

She made her television debut with the show Space City Sigma and launched her film career with Chandni (1989). Throughout the 1990s, she gained recognition for her powerful performances in critically acclaimed films such as Ashwa: The Black Horse (1993), Tarpan (1995), and most notably Droh Kaal (1994), a Govind Nihalani-directed drama that became a defining work in her career.

On television, she became widely known for her role in the popular serial Swabhimaan (1994), which addressed social issues and showcased her ability to handle substantial character roles. She also appeared in Hip Hip Hurray (1998) and Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki (2005), further establishing her presence in Indian television.

Her notable television work includes playing the uptight principal in the hit show Suvreen Guggal and appearing in Aladin (2009), Trishna (2009), and Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors (2020) as Mandira Mathur.

Her filmography spans more than three decades with notable roles in Ghulam (1998), Taal (1999), Dil Se.. (1998), and Ghaav: The Wound (2002). She continued working in films such as Shaadi Se Pehle (2006), Youngistaan (2014), and Rahasya (2014). In recent years, she gained renewed recognition for her OTT performances in Chhorii (2021), where she played Bhanno Devi, and Good Luck Jerry (2022) as Sarbati. Her 2018 appearance in KGF further expanded her presence in commercial cinema.

Her exceptional talent has been recognized with several prestigious awards throughout her career. She won the Star Screen Award for "Best Supporting Actress" for Drohkaal and the BFJA Bengal Film Journalist Award for "Best Supporting Actress" for Drishti.

In 2021, she received the OTT Award for Best Supporting Actress in an Original Film for Chhorii, and in 2020, she won the Talent Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Criminal Justice. Her performance in Kasaai (The Devil) earned her the Moonwhite Films International Film Fest MWFIFF Award for Best Actress Supporting Role.

Beyond acting, she is deeply committed to theater and social humanitarian work. In June 2001, she established Mandala, a space for arts collaborations, research, and education, with the aim of centering performing arts in society. Her first project under Mandala involved conducting theatre workshops with trafficked minors in a remand home in Mumbai, leading to four years of full-time involvement in their self-empowerment and rehabilitation.

As artistic director, she created Mandala TAM (Theatre Arts Module), a training methodology based on performing arts that proved highly successful in helping trafficked minors heal and transform mentally, physically, emotionally, and intellectually. She has also worked with children in remand homes and with sex workers, including starting a theatre troupe by enlisting 30 sex workers.

Mita Vashisht serves as visiting faculty at several premier design, film, and theater institutes in India, contributing to the education of aspiring artists. She has written and produced three short films as well as a television serial, and worked as an executive producer on the award-winning film The Name of a River.

Mita Vashisht is married to filmmaker Anup Singh. She continues to maintain a balance between her professional acting career and her commitment to social causes.
