Meenakshi Seshadri

Meenakshi Seshadri (born Shashikala Seshadri on November 16, 1963, in Sindri, then Bihar, now Jharkhand, India) is a former Indian actress and dancer who worked primarily in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil films.

She is widely remembered for her critically acclaimed portrayal of the titular character in the 1993 woman-centric film Damini (Lightning), a performance that earned her a National Award nomination.

Prior to her acting career, she established herself as a model and beauty pageant titleholder. She won the Eve's Weekly Miss India contest in 1981 at the age of 17, becoming one of the youngest women to be crowned Miss India.

Born into a Tamilian family, she was named Shashikala at birth and trained extensively in four Indian classical dance forms Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Odissi under the guidance of renowned dance masters Vempati Chinna Satyam and Jaya Rama Rao.

She made her Bollywood debut in 1983 with the film Painter Babu, which starred Rajiv Goswami but was a box-office disaster. She quickly shot to fame with the same-year blockbuster Hero, directed by Subhash Ghai, which also marked the debut of Jackie Shroff. This film established her as one of Hindi cinema's leading actresses in the 1980s and 1990s.

She went on to appear in more than 70 films over a fifteen-year career, becoming one of the most popular and highest-paid actresses of her time.

Among her notable performances are films such as Meri Jung (1985) with Anil Kapoor, Shahenshah (1988) and Vijay (1988) alongside Amitabh Bachchan, Gharana (1989), Ghar Ho To Aisa (1990) where she portrayed a feminist character, and Ghayal (1990) opposite Sunny Deol.

She also starred in Jurm (1990), Ghatak (1996), and Mahaguru. Her performance in Damini (1993) is considered her most superb acting work and left a lasting mark on Indian cinema.
