Bala V. Balachandran

Bala V. Balachandran (5 July 1937 – 28 September 2021) was an Indian academic, educator, and institution builder best known for his long career at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and for founding the Great Lakes Institute of Management in Chennai.

He was born in Pudupatti near Pudukottai in Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil family, and later built an academic career that linked India and the United States.

He studied at Annamalai University, where he completed degrees in mathematics and statistics before moving into teaching and advanced study.

One account notes that he began teaching while still a graduate student at Annamalai University, reflecting the early start of his academic career. He later pursued graduate study in the United States and earned a doctorate in industrial administration from Carnegie Mellon University in 1973.

After moving to the United States, he taught at the University of Dayton and Carnegie Mellon University before joining Northwestern University in 1973. At Kellogg, he taught for 35 years and became the J. L. Kellogg Distinguished Professor of Accounting and Information Management.

He also served as chair of the Accounting Information and Management Department from 1979 to 1983 and directed the Accounting Research Center from 1985 to 2006.

Bala V. Balachandran was known for teaching and research in statistics, econometrics, operations research, accounting, finance, managerial accounting, auditing, and information systems.

Kellogg described him as a prolific scholar who authored more than 100 articles and several books. His work and teaching influenced generations of students in both academic and professional settings.

He is widely remembered as the founder, chairman, and dean emeritus of the Great Lakes Institute of Management, which he established in Chennai in 2004. He created the institute with the goal of bringing high-quality management education to India, especially Tamil Nadu, while continuing his role at Kellogg.

He was also involved in helping shape other management institutions and initiatives in India, including early faculty recruitment at IIM Bangalore and the development of management education programs elsewhere.

In 2001, he received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his contribution to education. He died in Chicago on 27 September 2021, aged 84. He is remembered as a scholar, mentor, and entrepreneur who played a major role in linking Indian management education with global academic standards.
