Om Shivpuri was a renowned Indian actor, known for his significant contributions to both theatre and cinema. Born on July 14, 1936, in Patiala, Punjab, British India, he left an indelible mark on the Indian entertainment industry.

Om Shivpuri began his career at All India Radio in Jaipur, where he met his future wife, Sudha Shivpuri. He later joined the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi through a scholarship. After graduating in 1964, he became the first chief of the NSD Repertory Company. He directed the play "Tuglaq," written by Girish Karnad, which was first staged at the NSD in 1965.

He made his film debut in 1971 with Mani Kaul's "Ashadh Ka Ek Din" and soon followed by Gulzar's "Koshish" in 1972. Over a career spanning two decades, he acted in over 175 Hindi films, playing roles as varied as villains to supporting cast. Some of his notable films include "Aandhi," "Don," "Koshish," and "Sholay" among others.

He was also known for his dedication to his craft. He maintained a healthy weight throughout his life and focused on honing his skills and delivering outstanding performances. He was also known to enjoy smoking and drinking.

Om Shivpuri met his wife, Sudha Shivpuri, while working at All India Radio in Jaipur. They got married in 1968 after waiting for nine years. Together, they started a theatre group, Dishantar, which became one of Delhi's pioneering theatre groups.

Om Shivpuri and his wife, Sudha, had two children. Their son, Vineet Shivpuri, became a director, and their daughter, Ritu Shivpuri, became an actress. Sudha Shivpuri was also a noted TV actress, most known for her role as "Baa" in the TV serial "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi".

His highest-grossing movies have received a lot of accolades over the years, earning millions around the world. Some of his top movies include "Kudrat Ka Kanoon," "Maang Bharo Sajana," and "Yeh To Kamaal Ho Gaya" among others.

In recognition of his contribution to Indian theatre and drama, a five-day theatre festival called the Om Shivpuri Memorial Drama Festival is conducted every year.
