Om Shivpuri began his career at All India Radio in Jaipur, where he met his future wife, Sudha Shivpuri. He later joined the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi through a scholarship. After graduating in 1964, he became the first chief of the NSD Repertory Company. He directed the play "Tuglaq," written by Girish Karnad, which was first staged at the NSD in 1965.
He made his film debut in 1971 with Mani Kaul's "Ashadh Ka Ek Din" and soon followed by Gulzar's "Koshish" in 1972. Over a career spanning two decades, he acted in over 175 Hindi films, playing roles as varied as villains to supporting cast. Some of his notable films include "Aandhi," "Don," "Koshish," and "Sholay" among others.
