Laya

Laya (born 21 October 1981) is an Indian actress and Kuchipudi dancer known for her work primarily in Telugu films alongside a few Malayalam, Kannada, and Tamil films.

She was born in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, to Dharmaraj, a doctor, and Ruby, a music teacher at Nirmala High School in Vijayawada. Laya grew up in a Telugu Brahmin family and attended Nirmala High School in Vijayawada, where she was a state-level Chess player during her school days.

She made her acting debut as a child artist in the Telugu film "Bhadram Koduko" in 1992. She transitioned to lead roles with her debut film "Swayamvaram" in 1999, earning critical acclaim for her performances. She gained recognition as the runner-up in the Star 2000 contest, which aimed to discover and cast new talent for the movie "Paradesi," and she received a Special Jury Nandi Award for her performance in that film.

Notably, Laya won two consecutive Nandi Awards for Best Actress for her roles in "Manoharam" (2000) and "Preminchu" (2001). She won Nandi Awards for Swayamvaram, Manoharam, and Preminchu.

Apart from acting, Laya is a trained Kuchipudi dancer and has performed in more than 50 stage shows after moving to Hyderabad, where she discovered her passion for classical dance. She holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Applications and is also a qualified software professional. Laya has appeared in over 40 films across Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil, and Kannada languages.

In 2006, Laya married Dr. Sri Ganesh Gorty and moved to Los Angeles, California, USA. The couple has two children, a daughter named Sloka and a son named Vachan. She also has a sister, Diya Dharmaraj, who is a motivational speaker.

Although she settled in the USA after her marriage, Laya continues to stay connected with the film industry.
